HOW STUDENT LOAN PLANNER GOT STARTED

I should introduce myself. I’m Travis Hornsby, and I’m the chief student loan planner around here.

I started Student Loan Planner in October 2016 after helping my wife and her friends figure out their six figure student loans.

I used to be a bond trader, so I took my excel heavy skill set and built models for how to save money paying back student debt.

When my wife and I tackled her debt from med school, there were not a lot of resources out there for professionals like her. Most of the sites that did exist just wanted us to refinance so they could earn a commission.

All of our team members either hold the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) designations.

We all have a passion for conquering debt's hold on your life and mental energy.

Belhurst Castle

is a former private residence on the shores of Seneca Lake in Geneva, New York. It was designed by architects Fuller & Wheeler and built between 1885 and 1889. The three-story, nine bay wide Romanesque Revival style mansion is constructed of Medina sandstone. It has a slate gable roof, one-story solarium, and four rectangular stone chimneys. It features projecting porches, bays, towers with conical and pyramidal roofs, eyebrow windows, and a porte cochere with Syrian arch.

Supplemented by modern facilities, Belhurst Castle has been adapted for hotel and retail uses. It holds a hotel with three choices of lodging (Vinifera Inn, Chambers in the Castle, and White Springs Manor); two ballrooms to host weddings, two restaurants (Edgar's Restaurant and Stonecutters); spa, and a winery.

Belhurst Pinot Noir

Intense blueberry and blackberry notes penetrate through this fruity, forward Pinot Noir. Hints of savory herbs add elegance to an otherwise one-dimensional palate that finishes with big, coarse tannins.

As a kid, I always liked numbers. I would spend hours creating math problems and solutions. Whenever I wanted to play math teacher, my brother was forced to be my student! Given my love of facts and figures, it’s really no surprise that I chose a career where I work with numbers.

I believe that you can use your dollars and cents to create and live a meaningful life unique to your own dreams and desires. I started Rooted Planning Group because I wanted to offer financial PLANNING services. Our profession has a tendency to focus on “assets under management,” but I wanted to focus on the journey of your life (what I refer to in the podcast as your financial “vineyard”). I truly believe that, like wine, life and finances have different palettes that should be celebrated and not judged.

My journey as a business owner was not a direct path; it’s more of a long and winding road. Over the course of the past 30 years, I’ve worked in various financial services positions, but I’m most proud of the ensemble of women that I’ve brought together at Rooted Planning Group.

I am the author of Uncork Your Finances and the podcast host of Money Roots.

I also co-founded the Southern Tier Women's Financial Conference in 2014, an annual event dedicated to collaboration, networking, and financial education for women.
