Disaster Preparedness

In this episode of Wine and Dime we cover Disaster Preparedness. This is a topic that I was thinking a lot about this week, with the flooding in my home town and the Hurricanes that some of my clients were experiencing on the east coast. I cover some things that I went through and some tips that may help during a potential financial burden.

Shaw Vineyard is a Finger Lakes artisanal winery dedicated to gentle processing, cellar aging, and risk taking. Since 2002, Shaw has stretched the limits of cool-climate winemaking, experimenting with hands-on, old world methods to enhance the expression of some of the world’s most celebrated varietals.

We believe in sustainable viticulture and fine agricultural craftmanship. This is a vineyard-focused winery, owned and operated by a winemaker and grape grower with over 40 years of vinifera experience.

What are orange-style wines?

They are not wines made from oranges.

Instead, they are white wines made like red wine (i.e. skin contact). This is an ancient method of winemaking that is still done in rural areas in Europe, mostly in eastern Europe.

Steve Shaw was one of the first Finger Lakes winemakers to throw caution to the wind and dedicate large, commercially viable lots to the orange wine experiment. The first vintage was 2013, and it was extremely successful with both critics and consumers. The second vintage, in 2014, went even further by allowing skin contact for over an entire year before pressing!

Grapes used thus far in orange wine have been Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Grigio. These orange wines will not undergo filtration and are made in a cloudy vin rustique style, enhancing mouth feel and texture.

Orange wines are very approachable but they defy typical expectations. In some respects they can have the bounce of a white wine but the depth of a red, and yet the flavors are difficult to pin down in one easy description. Curious wine enthusiasts have something different to try at Shaw Vineyard.

As a kid, I always liked numbers. I would spend hours creating math problems and solutions. Whenever I wanted to play math teacher, my brother was forced to be my student! Given my love of facts and figures, it’s really no surprise that I chose a career where I work with numbers.

I believe that you can use your dollars and cents to create and live a meaningful life unique to your own dreams and desires. I started Rooted Planning Group because I wanted to offer financial PLANNING services. Our profession has a tendency to focus on “assets under management,” but I wanted to focus on the journey of your life (what I refer to in the podcast as your financial “vineyard”). I truly believe that, like wine, life and finances have different palettes that should be celebrated and not judged.

My journey as a business owner was not a direct path; it’s more of a long and winding road. Over the course of the past 30 years, I’ve worked in various financial services positions, but I’m most proud of the ensemble of women that I’ve brought together at Rooted Planning Group.

I am the author of Uncork Your Finances and the podcast host of Money Roots.

I also co-founded the Southern Tier Women's Financial Conference in 2014, an annual event dedicated to collaboration, networking, and financial education for women.
